Dissin’ Dean
July 29, 2003I love being a Democrat, because we eat our own. I mean look at how the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) is tearing into Howard Dean. They’re calling him a leftist and a McGovern democrat and just one step shy of being a pinko commie.
What’s amazing to me is that for some folks, Dean looks almost centrist. That’s of course a sign of just how far left a lot of people are here in San Francisco. Because so far it’s only some of my SF friends who’ve told me that they think Dean is a centrist who can win the general election.
I unfortunately have to side with the DLC, though not with the tone of their rhetoric. I think Howard Dean is a bit left of center, but I also think he has a decent shot at winning the nomination. However, he will then lose the general election in a trouncing that may make Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide look like a photo finish.
Dean just can’t win the heartland, the Mom-and-Pop center of the country. He might win a couple big coastal states, a California and maybe a New York. But Al Gore will tell you that winning along the edges of the US is not enough–you need to win a few in the heartland to make it happen.
