Google spoiling its employees
August 27, 2003I recently had a chance to visit a friend who works down at Google, and the thing that struck me was how spoiled and pampered the employees are. Like free lunch–you just walk over to one of the cafeterias and pick out whatever you want. I had a very good chicken-breast sandwich, with avocados and bacon.
Then there’s the free snacks/juices/bottled water/fruits that are stocked in little kitchens throughout their buildings. And the dog-friendly policy that lets people bring their canine companions to work.
Basically these people are never going to be able to adjust to the real world when they decide to leave Google for a normal company. A company where employees are treated like the easily-replaceable meat we really are, not pampered like Google employees are.
Interestingly, everyone I talked to their said they did not mind the fact that Google’s founder proclaimed no rush to go IPO. There’s no big push from employees for that instant wealth, I think in large part because they are treated so well.
I’m jealous. Really really jealous.
