Roadtrip Day 2: Petrified Forest/Balloon Fiesta/Albuquerque

October 5, 2003

In terms of mileage, today was much shorter than yesterday, a mere 400 miles. But still a long day because I had two lengthy sidetrips. First was the Petrified National Forest:

Amazing how many of these petrified trees are lying around. And there’s lots of nice hiking trails that let you get right up close and touch many of the trees. The northern half of this park is the Painted Desert:

Really pretty, I think prettier than Mojave yesterday. Lots of colors and landscapes, from sharp rocky cliffs to the melted colorful badlands.

Then after I arrived in Albuquerque I went straight to the Balloon Fiesta:

I love these festivals, especially the really bad food you can get. I had my first fried Twinkie (awesome) and a tasty Spam sandwich:

But the big highlight was the balloon glow, which was spectacular. They said over 300 balloons participated:

Tonight I’m staying at another Motel 6, this one here in Albuquerque.
