Roadtrip Day 3: Oklahoma City
October 6, 2003No big side trips today, just a straight shot from Albuquerque, thru the Texas panhandle, and on to Oklahoma City. About 550 miles altogether, my mileage has been really good on this leg. About 33 mpg, which is incredible. Don’t know if it’s because this leg has been a gradual downhill–Oklahoma City is a lower elevation than Albuquerque was.
In O.C. I did do some sightseeing. I went to the National Memeorial here, which commemorates the people who died in the Tim McVeigh terrorist attack on the federal building here:
It’s a nice enough memorial, I just think they tried to cram too many different parts. You know, like at the Vietnam Memorial it is just a single black wall with names, and I think it is possibly the most powerful memorial I’ve seen.
Here they have a big reflecting pool, a bunch of little glass-and-steel chairs to represent the victims, an orchard to represent the rescue workers, etc. It’s just too many bits and pieces, I think it really should be a simple stark memorial like the Vietnam Memorial. Oh well, it’s still good. A nice place to reflect on the senselessness of the attack and all the suffering it causes.
