Whither Macintosh?

October 17, 2003

Okay, so yesterday Apple unveiled a Windows version of iTunes. Now the problem for me is that one of the reasons I keep a Mac in my office, in addition to the PC I use, was that I love iTunes. So my Mac was kinda primarily a music server. Though it does serve second duty as a handy little Unix box.

But now that iTunes is available for Windows, why keep a Mac around? At least here at work–all my work is done in a PC and now with iTunes for Windows I can also do all my music listening from the Mac.

Don’t get me wrong, for home I still love my iBook and won’t be switching any time soon. It’s such a stable, clean system and that’s what I’m after for my personal computer. It handles my iPod and my Palm handheld and my digital camera so effortlessly, much less headache than I have had trying to connect devices to a Windows PC. But for the workplace maybe I don’t need this Mac anymore.

It’s almost like Apple is preparing for the demise of the Mac–iTunes for Windows seems like another nail in the Macintosh coffin. What’s next, iPhoto and iMovie?
