The mess in Frankfort

November 3, 2003

This has been a good year to be a political junkie, especially for me. I mean, I got to witness and participate in the biggest political upheaval of the year, Schwarzenegger’s victory in California.

And now that I’m living in Kentucky, I’m watching this lovely nasty race for the governor’s mansion. Now as a life-long Democrat I’d normally back Chandler, but of course in California I voted for the Republican, Arnold.

The story here in Kentucky is more complicated. The current Democratic governor, Patton, is a real ethical and moral basket case. And Democrats have held the governorship for something like 30 years. So there’s real agitation for change, which is helping fuel the Republican Fletcher.

But he’s running a very very negative campaign, and his ads are full of distortions like claiming Al Gore wanted to abolish guns. It’s just very ugly, especially since from all the profiles I’ve read Fletcher sounds like a good decent guy. He’s been an engineer, a fighter pilot, a doctor, and a Congressman. A distinguished career tarnished by this negative campaign.

Oh well, thankfully I ended up not registering to vote here yet. I want to wait until I have a permanent address, after I’ve finally bought a place of my own here in Louisville.
