Monster of an ad campaign

December 17, 2003

Holy Madison Avenue, Monster.com announced a $125 million ad campaign for 2004. That’s a big ad budget by any measure, but especially these days for an Internet company.

I remember fondly when CNET burned through its own big wad of cash on an ad campaign. For a while we were sponsors on Monday Night Football and I always got a kick out of Al Michael’s saying “and here’s the CNET play of the game”. I don’t necessaily think that was money well spent–it would perhaps have been better to use it to buy back debt or invest in technology.

I’m a bit surprised that Monster feels the need to do this–as the economy picks up people are bound to start job hunting, judging from the dis-satisfaction you hear everywhere.
