Louisville Zoo
February 23, 2004Grade: B+
Sunday was a beautiful sunny day, temps around 50. For February that’s a damned heat wave so I decided I needed to take advantage of it, get outside and enjoy some sun. I’d never been to the Louisville Zoo so that seemed a good way to get myself outside, get some sun, and learn a little along the way.
I’m glad I did because the Zoo here is wonderful. Especially good was the HerpAquarium where you can see all sorts of snakes and lizards. Gave me a bit of the creeps to see all the snakes, even the non-venomous ones, but it was worth it. Giant constrictors, asps and rattlesnakes, all sorts of creepy crawlies on display.
The other big attraction is the Gorilla Forest, though unfortunately the gorillas were not outdoors on Sunday. I guess even 50 is still too cold so you had to go into their enclosure and see them. Got to see the little baby gorialla nursing, which was cute.
The other good exhibits were the giraffes–one of them was eating so you could watch him munching on his hay, which was in a bin about fifteen feet off the ground. The bin was like a dumbwaiter, it could be raised or lowered to accomodate the different sized giraffes.
Now the one downside that this shares with so many zoos is that they need a sign up front to tell you which exhibits and activities will not be held that day. Like when you go to a play and they post a sign to tell you the understudy will be playing the main role tonight. That’s the one reason I’m not giving the zoo an A, is that they didn’t bother with this most basic customer-service type of thing. I still haven’t seen a zoo that does it, I will keep campaigning and hope that some day they will.
