A terabyte of email storage?

May 19, 2004

Certain people in the beta of Google’s GMail service are getting one terabyte of storage in their accounts. That’s a million megabytes, or a thousand gigabytes.

Of course I can’t imagine anybody is anywhere close to that limit so who knows if it’s real of just a marketing number. Hard drives are cheap but still it would cost Google way too much money to physically have a terabyte of disk space available for everyone. They clearly have to be thinking that most people won’t ever need that much storage.

Still, it’s kinda cool. My GMail account is one of those that got the 1 terabyte of storage. I’m not using even 1 megabyte at this point.
