Spirited Away

Grade: A
Now that I’ve seen it, I’m disappointed that I waited so long to see the anime film Spirited Away. I’ve had the DVD for quite some time, but only got around to popping it into the player and watching it Friday night. In a word, marvelous.

Chihiro is a bratty little girl whose parents get transformed by evil spirit food into pigs, and she must struggle her way thru the spirit world to save them. She is befriended by a boy named Haku with magical powers who takes her under his wing and helps her navigate this strange universe. Along the way she runs into stinky monsters, river spirits, dragons, and twin sorceresses who are as opposite from each other as you can imagine.

This movie is just so wonderfully imaginative, filled with magical creatures and inventive situations that Chihiro must navigate in order to save her parents. The wonderful story is backed by beautiful animation that brings this spirit world to life.

Highly recommended, perhaps a bit too intense for kids but otherwise a wonderful film.
