That old Kentucky rain

July 11, 2004

One thing I like about the Kentucky rain is that it doesn’t mess around. There’s no wimpy little showers or sprinkles–when it rains here it just absolutely pours down. Like Niagara Falls magically started pouring right on top of everything.

I was caught at the Best Buy on Saturday by a big storm that came through. The rain was coming down in solid walls of water–literally you couldn’t see even the first row of parked cars from the doorway of the Best Buy. I hope to God people caught out on the highways were smart enough to pull over and wait it out, there’s no way you could drive thru something like that.

It was also I think a sign from God that I made the right decision trading in my crappy Infiniti for a nice little used Honda CR-V. Because when the rain finally did subside enough to risk going out to my car, the parking lot had turned into a lake. If I had been there in my car, the water would have been high enough that I probably would have had to wait for the parking lot to drain before I could safely try to open the door.

But with my little CR-V, it was sitting above the water-line so I could just wade over and get in. Thankfully I had worn my Teva sandals so I didn’t have to take off my shoes and wade barefoot like a number of people did.

Yeah, I am really liking this little CR-V. The VTEC engine has a surprising amount of pep–this thing accelerates faster than my old G20 did.
