The vagaries of the discount movie theatre
July 15, 2004The Pitch Black sequel, Chronicles of Riddick, is already coming to the dollar theater here in Louisville. That’s really fast–the thing just opened in regular theaters last month.
It must have really tanked, plus I guess there’s a crowd of new movies opening this weekend. That probably accelerates the departure of under-performing flicks.
What a brutal business–you got a month and after that it’s off to the dollar theater. What if the book business were like that–if a book doesn’t sell in the first month it’s off to the discount bin? You’d never be able to build word-of-mouth for the little books that grow into best sellers.
