What I miss about San Francisco, Part 1
August 3, 2004One of the weird things about the whole San Francisco/Bay Area scene is that the Internet, especially email, has become such a part of the fabric out there. I ran into a guy a couple years ago at a party, and somehow I ended up on his mailing list. He’s mostly a performance artist, though he is also a writer. Even after I moved, I didn’t bother un-subscribing from his list. Figured it would be a way to stay in touch with what’s happening in the City by the Bay.
So I just got the latest spammage from his mailing list, he’s co-hosting a crystal meth party. The fact that he is just willing to email that fact out to everyone on his mailing list is so San Francisco. Drugs and sex and alcohol are all just part of the everyday mix out there. Folks here in Kentucky would be shocked.
Sometimes I really believe San Francisco is part of a different universe than the rest of the country. They have a reality that doesn’t quite sync up with everyone else. But I miss it.
