‘Hero’ was good but not great
August 29, 2004As with so many things related to Quentin Tarantino, the movie Hero does not quite live up to the hype. It’s good, but not great.
Jet Li plays a nameless (literally) warrior in ancient China who comes to the emperor and recounts how he killed three great assasins who had targetted the emperor. We see the battles in flashback, and it is the battles where the movie shines. It has that uniquely unrealistic kind of martial arts that makes this breed of films so much fun to watch. The kind of stuff Tarantino obviously loves, based on his homage called Kill Bill.
And the movie is undeniably gorgeous to look at–beautiful scenery and majestic settings for the battles. But that doesn’t make up for the fact that the movie also drags in several spots. Probably because the action is so incredible that it makes any dialogue-based scene seem like a waste of time. Let’s get to the next battle, enough with the exposition already.
