Splenda is amazing
September 14, 2004I’ve tried the new reduced-sugar products sweetened with Splenda, and I didn’t notice any difference. I think it’s really going to revolutionize the food business.
The product I tried was Hawaiian Punch. The label proclaims it has 60% less sugar, primarily of course because they’ve sweeted it with Splenda instead. So it is really low in calories–just 45 for a regular 8-oz glass. But it tastes to me just like regular Hawaiian Punch. And it isn’t any more expensive, at least not at Wal-Mart when you buy it in the gallon jug. Definitely my fruit punch of choice now. I’m gonna try Pepsi Edge next, to see if that can be my new cola of choice.
Another reduced-sugar product I tried recently was the 1/3 less sugar Froot Loops. What concerns me here is that they don’t use any artificial sweetener–all they’ve done is just reduce the amount of sugar. And yet the cereal tastes fine to me, I couldn’t tell the difference. So why can’t they simply reduce the sugar in their regular cereal? Why go with a specific “1/3 less sugar” version while keeping the regular version on store shelves? If they can reduce the sugar and keep the taste the same, they owe it to consumers to change the formula in their regular product.
