Bare-knucle politics
October 15, 2004One of the things that’s surprised me here in Kentucky is the bare-knuckle politics. I guess I was expecting kindof a genteel politics, people politely debating in the town square with everyone sipping iced tea.
But man, the congressional fight between Anne Northup and Tony Miller is about as close to a bare-knuckle brawl as you’re likely to see. Miller has twisted Anne’s record in so many ways, and the Northup campaign has essentially painted Miller as a blithering idiot.
Unfortunately Tony Miller is the Democrat, and I’m afraid to say I won’t be able to vote for him. I’m not certain I will vote for Anne Northup either–she’s a bit too conservative for my taste. But after seeing a bit of Miller in the one TV debate, I think Northup might be right–he is something of a doofus. I’m sure he’s a nice guy but he has so little grasp of facts and issues. Maybe he’d be fine as your next-door neighbor but not as your next congressman.
The senate fight here is just as nasty, between Jim Bunning and Dan Mongiardo. Bunning’s ads paint Mongiardo as a “Medicare millionaire” because his physician’s practice has billed for millions in medicare. I think those attacks really hurt the Mongiardo campaign, but then Bunning started acting rather oddly and the race has tightened back up. Mongiardo still trails but he’s closing.
Across the river, we’re seeing a nasty fight for Indiana governor as well. So politics all over this area is very rough and tumble. I’m glad because it makes for entertaining television. I’m gonna miss this campaign season when it’s over.
