Louisville airport limits taxi companies

October 21, 2004

I don’t quite understand why the airport commission here felt the need to sign exclusive contracts with two taxi companies to serve the Louisville International Airport. It’s been hard enough for me to get a cab the couple times I’ve needed one, why make it harder by limiting the choices?

The airport commission of course claims it’s to help end confusion which helps consumers, but I can’t believe it’s really anything to do with helping consumers. It helps them, in terms of guaranteed revenue from these contracts. And it hurst consumers by giving us only two cab companies and by raising prices since you know the cabbies are gonna pass along the new higher airport fees.

One thing I hadn’t realized was how few cab rides originate out of the airport here. The article said about 100 per day on average. That’s really small, makes me wonder why it’s even worthwhile to bid on a contract like that. I guess even that small number is worth it in a mid-sized city like Louisville.
