New Eminem is disappointing

November 17, 2004

I bought the new Eminem CD, Encore, this weekend at Circuit City. After listening to it a couple times I think I’m gonna have to give it a thumbs down.

There’s no question that the raps are more complex than what he’s done before, there’s real growth in that sense. Yet his anger is still directed at the same people he was angry at with the last two albums–his wife, his fame, all the people who are suing him. So while the writing may have grown, the subject matter is still the same.

It’s kinda like what happened I think to Stephen King–he’s been re-writing the same damned stories for the past couple decades. Eminem I think has fallen into that same trap–I’m not questioning the amazing artistry of what he’s done, but it is mostly a re-hash of stuff he’s done before.

There’s a couple songs on the album that I’m sure I will put into heavy rotation on the iPod, “Crazy in Love” and “Like Toy Soldiers” were the two that come to mind. But otherwise it’s not anything we haven’t heard before in his previous albums.
