Once more unto the Best Buy
November 26, 2004Oh my God, I don’t think I’m ever going to do the Best Buy After Thanksgiving sale ever again. Of course I say that now but if the deals are as good next year I’m probably still going to be there.
So anyway, this year I was in Indianapolis (The Radisson had a good deal on rooms and I just wanted to get away for a couple days) and of course a cold front came thru on Wednesday. So this morning when I get up at 5 a.m. to head over to Best Buy, I know it’s going to be cold. But what I didn’t know was how damned crowded the store was gonna be.
I got there around 5:30, I figured there’d be a few people in line. Wrong–there were hundreds. The parking lot was essentially full, I had to park quite a ways back and run thru the cold windy parking lot so I could get in line before the next hundred people got in front of me.
The store opened promptly at 6 a.m., we all went in very orderly not like the crush I saw on TV tonight at other stores. The biggest problem once inside was not the crowds per se, but the store configuration. They had put big boxes to block out certain paths in the store, primarily to allow for the long long checkout line that snaked all the way around the building. So you had to wander back and forth to find your way around to certain sections of the store.
I got my primary target, a nice 512 MB memory stick for my digital camera. And of course I’ll be able to use the stick when I get a PSP next year. It was a really good deal, just $60. That’s half off the regular Best Buy price, and it’s a good $15 less than the very best price I could find on the Internet.
Also picked up a copy of Elton John’s new album, Peachtree Road. I listened to it on the drive home this afternoon from Indianapolis. Wasn’t bad but it was not that great either–the reviews had been so glowing but I’m not sure what they were talking about now that I’ve heard it. There’s no real stand-out song that is going to be an enduring addition to his repertoire. There’s no “Crocodile Rock” or “Daniel” or anything near that level.
The final Best Buy purchase was a copy of Aladdin, just $10 which is even better than the used prices I’ve seen. All combined everything was about half the regular price, so I saved enough money to make waiting in the checkout line worthwhile.
