Detailed hands-on of the Sony PSP hardware

December 6, 2004

Gamespot published a nice hands-on look at the Sony PSP, which they obtained from an auction run by Sony itself. I suspect mostly as a way to help generate publicity, which naturally seems to have worked.

Anyway, the part that disappointed me was learning that the PSP will not use the regular Memory Stick. Instead it’s using the smaller (and more expensive) Memory Stick Duo format. The Duo is about half the size of the memory stick, and it is usually sold with a little adapter that lets you stick it in normal Memory Stick slots if you have to. But for the PSP you won’t need the adapter–it apparently only accepts the smaller Duo.

Bummer because that means I won’t be able to use the nice 512 MB Memory Stick I have in my digital camera. I bought it thinking it was kinda pricey but would be a worthwhile investment since I’d be able to use it in both the camera and the PSP when it comes out. Now of course those plans are shot to hell.

I’m gonna have to keep an eye out for a good sale on the Duos. Hopefully sometime this holiday season there will be another good sale at Best Buy or Circuit City. Maybe not as good a price as I found on the 512 MB standard model but hopefully not too expensive either.
