The Louvre is too big
December 26, 2004Okay, there is no earthly way you can see a place like the Louvre in one day. So I don’t think they should put that big a collection in one place–the limit should be the number of things you can reasonably see in one day.
Spent the day wandering through this massive museum. I don’t know what the big deal was with the glass pyramid but I liked it. I thought it was especially cool from the inside–you could look out and up at the massive Louvre building wrapped around the courtyard.
Saw of course the Big Three that everyone tries to see–Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and the Mona Lisa. The last one was definitely the big attraction–a huge crowd pushes and shoves around it trying to take a worthless photo of the priceless painting. They cleverly place it at the end of the Italian wing, so you have to pass thru all the Renaissance paintings to get to the ML. The hope being you’ll absorb at least some additional culture along the way.
Mom wanted to see the Egyptian collection so after The Big Three we wandered thru part of Egypt. It was amazing–a whole museum in itself, you could easily have spent a day just wandering thru that stuff. Of course I wonder how much of it was plunder, stuff I’m sure the Egyptians want back but the French have said non.
Anyway, my feet are really killing me, these stupid shoes are not apparently as comfortable as I’d hoped. Tomorrow I think we will just do one of the hop-on/hop-off buses to see some of the other major sites. Then Tuesday we’re booked for an excursion to Normandy.
