If you want to help

December 30, 2004

It was surreal to be on vacation enjoying Paris, while this huge tsunami tragedy was unfolding. We’d been in Paris a couple days when the tsunami hit, our hotel had two English language news channels that let us follow the events: BBC World and CNN International. Of the two I felt BBC World had the better coverage, mostly because CNN International had Richard Quest whom I find very annoying. He’s not a good interviewer nor a good news reader, and the BBC World people seemed to have much more gravitas in their coverage.

Anyway, if you want to help there’s lots of options, eBay has set up a way to let you sell items and donate proceeds to the relief efforts of various aid agencies. Personally I’ll be donating thru Red Cross–I don’t really trust donating to any of the UN organizations. I mean, there’s so much corruption it seems, and waste, in the UN so I’d rather donate thru more efficient organizations. Doctors without Borders is also supposed to be very good–upwards of 85% of donation dollars actually get out into the field. I rather doubt the UN can make the same claims.
