We’re throwing out too much crap

January 12, 2005

So there was a story this past weekend in the Courier-Journal about an organization called FreeCycle.org. They let people offer up free stuff that they’d ordinarily throw away, and then other members can chime in hoping to claim the freebies. The idea being of course preventing stuff from ending up in the landfill. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

So I went and joined the Louisville Freecycle group and realized that we’re throwing away too much crap in this country. I mean, I’m getting dozens of emails a day with people trying to give away amazing stuff–used computers, sectional couches, rooftop luggage carriers, the list is endless. And if it weren’t for Freecycle, this stuff would be going out with the trash.

The amazing thing is that there seems to almost always be somebody willing to take even the weirdest junk somebody else is giving away. Half the country throws away too much, but luckily the other half is apparently a bunch of pack rats who will take the stuff.
