Rising price of a cheap movie
January 15, 2005My favorite cheap theater, the Village 8, has increased their ticket prices by 50%. Instead of $2 it’s now $3 to see a film. Supposedly this price makes them a mid-price theater and they will get first-run movies sooner.
I don’t know that this was an issue–they always seemed pretty crowded to me even if the movies weren’t that new. The key is they were cheap.
I’m guessing part of the problem is the increasing speed with which movies are coming to DVD. By the time some of the really popular flicks get to Village 8, they’re almost out on DVD. Like Collateral, that came out on DVD like a month or so after it came to Village 8.
I’m hoping there will be another cheap theater I can find, but I doubt it. There’s one across the river but that’s too far to drive. Sigh.

TrackBack URIAny price increase stinks, but $3 isn’t bad. And it’s more fun to see a movie in a theatre sometimes. It feels more special somehow.
Yeah, I’ll probably still go to the Village 8. It’s just a bummer to see a price increase like that.
