Damn there are some expensive boats out there

January 22, 2005

Went to the Louisville Boat & RV Show today, mostly to see the RV’s but also to take a peek at some of the yachts out there. I did find a little RV, small enough that it can probably be towed by my little Honda CR-V. It’s called the Tab, it’s also short enough to fit in most garages though probably not mine. The CR-V, which is shorter than the Tab, doesn’t seem to have much clearance when I get into the garage. The garage itself there’s plenty of room, but when I drive thru the garage door there’s not much clearance at that point.

One of the bigger, much bigger, RV’s I saw was so large it had a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. Not quite as deep as a kitchen model would be, maybe half or two-thirds but still impressive to see something like that in an RV trailer. And the trailer actually seemed fairly reasonable given what it included–just under $100,000. But then of course you have to buy some gigantic truck or RV to pull it, that’s another $50,000 or so. You end up spending a ton of money on that thing.

Some of the bus-based RV’s were amazing–when they’re parked you can flip a switch and the sides pull out to dramatically increase the available square footage. Bigger than most apartments in San Francisco that I lived in. Of course the prices were amazing as well–I don’t think I saw one that was under $200,000.

Then there were the cabin-cruiser boats. I only looked at a couple because I’m definitely never going to own a boat. But I did want to take a peek–you have to take off your shoes before boarding the show models. There was a three-level one I saw for a mere $425,000. The top level was the pilot house, equipped with all kinds of gadgets and gizmos. The main cabin was like a living room/kitchen area, then two cabins about a half-deck lower than the main cabin were the two bedrooms. That’s right, a boat with two bedrooms.

Anyway, I was definitely glad to see that Tab RV–when I decide to quit my job and go wandering the country now I know there’s an affordable RV trailer I can buy.
