Latest Chesney album is okay but not as good as the last two

January 26, 2005

Bought the latest Kenny Chesney CD last night, Be As You Are. I’ve listened to it a couple times now and it’s not as good as his last two efforts. The thing is it just doesn’t seem quite as much of a country album as I’d expected.

That’s not to say it’s bad, and maybe if you like this direction he’s going it’s okay. But it ended up sounding to me like Chesney was almost channeling Jimmy Buffet. There were no up-tempo songs, it was all slow or mid-tempo stuff with a bit of that calypso/Virgin Islands/tequila thing. It is essentially as if somebody had convinced Jimmy Buffet to try producing a country album.

Dunno, there’s a couple songs I like but I’m just not feeling this album.
