Gracenote failed me tonight

February 21, 2005

I’ve been a user of Gracenote for some time, way back when it was plain old CDDB. Of course I’ve never used it directly–the software CD players I’ve used on various computers have all integrated with the CDDB to identify track info whenever I insert a new CD. My current favorite CD player, iTunes, uses Gracenote.

So a couple days ago I was down on Bardstown road and I saw that one of the used CD stores I prowl, Better Days, is closing. It’s unfortunate because I always feel like competition is good–when they close it will leave Books and Music Exchange as the main used music store in the area, and Ear X-stacy as the main alternative music store.

But anyway, as part of their closing there is a 50%-off sale going on. Includes everything in the store basically, so I picked up a couple items I’d normally not buy at regular price but at half-off what the hell. One of the CD’s I picked up was Vuelve by Ricky Martin. It’s one of his best-reviewed albums, and even though it’s in Spanish I figured for $4 I’ll give it a spin.

Tonight I finally got around to putting it into iTunes, but the problem is that the track list which came back from Gracenote was way off. It had the first and the last couple songs in the right order, but everything else was all scrambled. I had to go in and manually re-edit the song titles, which is the one thing Gracenote is supposed to prevent you from having to do. How annoying.
