Starting my electrical wiring class tonight

February 24, 2005

I’m leaving work early today, and for the next few Thursdays, so I can attend an Adult Education class in electrical wiring. It’s sponsored by the public schools district here in Louisville.

Should be interesting to see how badly I do. I’ve got that lovely useless BS in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M. Which means nothing when it comes to practical stuff like AC wiring. I can hook up DC batteries just fine, but high-voltage AC always gives me the willies.

The main goal here is that I really want to install lights in my basement, as the first step to finishing the basement area. I figure even with the cost of the class and books, it’ll be cheaper for me to learn this stuff and do it myself. I’d probably still have to pay a certified electrician to inspect the wiring when I’m done.

Eventually if the class goes well I’m thinking I might take the follow-up classes and try to be a certified electrician myself. As a fall-back career when this whole Internet thing finally drives me crazy. That time is coming soon, I can feel it.
