Too much consumer goodness
February 26, 2005I went to see the new Wal-Mart Supercenter last night, and this thing is kinda frightening. It’s right next to the defunct Bashford Manor Mall, apparently now that the Wal-Mart is in place they’ll be doing some renovations to demolish part of the mall and turn it into a strip center.
Anyway, this thing is huge. I thought when I first walked in that I was at one of those aircraft hangers where they house 747’s during repairs. You cannot describe how enormous this thing is, it’s the definition of a “big box” retailer. I’m thinking it’s maybe three or four times the size of a normal Wal-Mart. Some of that is used by the grocery section, and the rest is used for an expanded selection of stuff you’d find at a normal Wal-Mart.
I wandered through for 45 minutes, and really only picked up one thing–a $5 memory card for my Gamecube. Still it was impressive to see the full array of consumer products on hand at the store. Strangely though some selections were disappointing, like their office supply section. It was really lame, you’d do much better at a Staples. On the other hand, the pet supply section has just as many dog food choices as I’d see at a Feeder’s Supply.
The grocery selection was also impressive. As many if not more frozen dinner choices as you’d get at a Kroger’s. The fresh foods had less choices than a grocery store, it was definitely tilted heavily to convenience foods like frozen stuff and pre-packaged meats. But that’s fine to me since that’s mostly what I’m looking for. And they had a nice-sized bakery as well.
This thing is definitely going to hurt if not kill the Target across the street.
