The tale of two Sherry’s
March 19, 2005I went out to karaoke again last night, and this time I did actually get up the nerve to do one song. Picked Bryan Adam’s “Summer of ‘69″. The thing is, when you get up there the song itself is so loud you can’t hear your singing. So I have no idea how far off key I was, and I couldn’t adjust because I couldn’t hear my own voice.
Twinkie was there, and she did a number of songs including a great rendition of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know”. It’s one of the great man-done-her-wrong songs and Twinkie sang it with real feeling, like it had some personal meaning. Dunno what, but it was fun.
Angela was also there, and not only did she do a couple songs herself, she also did a great duet on Flashdance with Twinkie. Irene Cara watch out.
There was also this old guy, apparently out with his wife, and he did a couple sad sad songs. Willie Nelson’s “You Were Always On My Mind” and Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”. I thought I saw his wife crying during his rendition of My Way. I wonder what the story is behind all that.
The real story to me though was the two Sherry’s I met. One sat next to us, she is apparently a karaoke DJ at another club, the Peppermint Lounge. Never heard of the place, she said it’s an older crowd that goes. She did a great rendition of “God Bless the USA” that got the whole bar up and singing with her.
The other Sherry was at the far end of the bar, she was apparently out celebrating her birthday with a bunch of friends. And man could she sing–I wish I could remember what the songs were that she did but I just remember that they were really good.
Good crowd, good times.

TrackBack URIHere’s the story behind “My Way”. The woman was Beverly; the man was her boyfriend Mark. About 7 years ago Beverly met a bar regular nicknamed Aloysius. Beverly had just come out of a 20 + year bad marriage. Aloysius (though not much to look at) swept Beverly off her feet with his kind personality. They decided to get married and were the second couple to get married in KC’s. (Bit-o-history: my husband and I were the first.)
Al and Beverly became bar royalty. They sat in the same seats every weekend and we all felt as though they were part of our family. Al was one of those people who was full of surprises. Most people were surprised that he had such a beautiful voice. Al was a crooner and the place would go quiet when he sang “My Way.”
Last April Al suddenly passed away. It’s a loss that we all still feel, especially his devoted wife Beverly. While Beverly’s boyfriend Mark is a great guy, we all still morn the loss of Al. I don’t think there will ever be a day when we don’t think of him when someone croons a Sinatra tune.
Word on the street is that Peppermint Lounge Sherry is the new Friday Night DJ at KCs.
