Internet bubble redux?
March 21, 2005Is it the return of the Internet bubble, when people wildly over-paid to snatch up promising properties? This morning there’s the $2 billion that Barry Diller has paid for Ask Jeeves, and Yahoo paid a still-undisclosed sum of money for Flickr.
Of the two, I really only use Flickr. I feel a slight affinity for Ask Jeeves since they were based in Emeryville, where I used to live (it’s a little city wedged in between Oakland and Berkeley). But I don’t really use their search that often. I’m mostly a Google guy. Not certain what InterActive Corp sees in Ask Jeeves that’s worth this much money.
Now Flickr on the other hand I think has a real shot at being big. They’ve grown very organically, I love their features and the open architecture. For example, I use an iPhoto plug-in written by an independent developer to upload my photos into Flickr. Everybody who uses it seems to become an evangelist for the site. With Yahoo’s muscle behind it there should be some great things ahead for them.
