Flat-panel TV’s starting to enter my price range

April 23, 2005

I was at Best Buy today, mostly just to pick up some s-video cables. I’m changing my hook-ups from old RCA cables to the s-video cables–Dish, DVD, and PS2 now are all s-video thru a little switch box to the old TV. I don’t have a fancy home theater set-up, unlike some people I know. But I realized I should make the most of what I do have and thus the weekend project to upgrade all the hook-ups to s-video.

So anyway, while I was there of course I wandered thru the TV section and they had just set up a new 32-inch Westinghouse LCD HDTV. The thing is gorgeous–nice bright widescreen in a skinny little flat case. And it’s almost affordable–Best Buy had it for $1599, and that qualifies for 18-month interest free. I was sorely tempted because it’s the exact size I’d been looking for–large enough to view movies but not so large it dominates the living room.

But that price is still a smidge too high for me. I’m thinking when they drop under $1200 I might take the bait. But I’m surprised to see an LCD that large already near $1500. So at this rate by Christmas they might have fallen into my price range.
