Helping out at Pitt Academy
June 22, 2005So tonight I helped out at Pitt Academy, a local Catholic school that seeks to help students with learning disabilities by providing personalized education. They’re relocating to a new building (the church had to sell the old location, in part because the school is struggling with budget problems due to lowered fund-raising). The Macintosh user’s group here in Louisville helps provide the computer lab for the kids, and one of the group’s members is the IT guy at the school.
So tonight we put together the computer desks for the primary computer lab. They are IKEA-style desks–they have the little posts and round metal anchors that all IKEA furniture uses to hold the pieces together. Luckily we didn’t have to assemble them all the way–these were the old desks and had been only partially disassembled for the move to the new building.
Unfortunately the building A/C isn’t working yet so the room was cooled by a lone window A/C which couldn’t really keep up. We were all sweating by the time we’d finished the 10 tables. We also put all the iMacs back onto the desks but there’s no wiring yet, electrical or networking, so we couldn’t actually power up stuff to make sure they all survived the move.
The Academy is hoping to line up some volunteer electricians in a couple weeks to do the electrical/networking stuff. Then we can come back in and finish the install of all the hardware.
It always feels good to be doing something to help others. Especially these kids–a lot of them would be drop-outs if not for the attention they can get at Pitt.
