The Tomorrow People
June 27, 2005What is it about the Brits and cheaply-made science fiction television? We’ve all heard about Dr. Who of course, with its infamously cheesy special effects. But the production values on that show look head-and-shoulders above The Tomorrow People, a 70’s-era Thames production which I just stumbled across while browsing at Wild And Woolly (an independent video store that specializes in the offbeat).
I’ve only watched the first episode so far and scanned a couple of the other episodes. The basic story appears to be that there is an evolving group of mutants who come into their powers right around puberty. Stan Lee should be suing these guys, that sounds awfully like the set-up for X-Men.
Also, Paramount should sue them for ripping of Star Trek–there’s a teleporter that works suspiciously like the one in Star Trek. Except of coure that the special effect is so cheesy as compared to the original Star Trek it’s unbelievable. How could a show that came out after Star Trek have so much worse special effects?
All this aside, I must admit the show has been fairly entertaining. I’m looking forward to catching the next few episodes. The DVD box set I rented is apparently seasons 1 and 2, and despite the cheesy effects this show lasted something like 8 seasons.
