iTunes to make the album disappear
June 30, 2005I’m taking a road trip next week to go see Stevie Nicks, and one of the best things about road trips is the uninterrupted time to just listen to new music. So I was shopping around last night on iTunes to see if there was any new music I could add into the iPod for the drive up.
I ended up with a couple albums’ worth of songs in the shopping cart, but no two from any one artist’s album. In other words, I’ve bought a bunch of singles. Which makes me wonder how iTunes might be changing the way artists record music.
I mean, why bother recording a whole album of music? Record a couple good songs and release them on iTunes. No need to find filler crap just so you can have ten tunes on the album.
Of course the record labels are built around promoting and distributing a whole album of music, be it on CD or cassette or iTunes. So there’s that inertia to overcome. But I’m betting it won’t be too long before we start seeing artists record and release individual songs instead of whole albums.

In fact it’s only been when I find some interesting CD at the store, usually the used music store, that I buy the CD. Everything else is singles bought on iTunes. […]
