Free shipping boxes from the USPS

July 27, 2005

Did you know the US Postal Service will deliver free shipping boxes to your door? I did not, until yesterday.

See I’m trying to unclutter my life, so I’m selling off gadgets and crap that I’ve accumulated. Basically my goal is to sell off, or otherwise dispose of, anything which I haven’t used in more than a year. Means I’m gonna be eBay-ing a bunch of stuff–video games, a PDA I no longer use, cordless phone, and so on. Which in turn means I’ll be needing to ship out a lot of stuff.

That’s what brought me to the USPS Web site–to see what kind of shipping calculators and what-not they might have. That’s when I wandered into their online store and saw that Priority Mail supplies, such as boxes, are free. You simply agree to use their service when shipping the boxes. So I’ve ordered a bunch of small boxes, for stuff like the video games, and some medium sized boxes for stuff like the old iBook bag I no longer need or use.

I don’t expect to make a lot of my money back this way, I’m sure it will all sell for pennies on the dollar. But just to be rid of it all will be payment enough. And many thanks to the USPS for making it free and easy to get the shipping boxes I’ll need.
