$30 gas tank

On my way home I saw that every gas station I passed had unleaded for $3.09 or more. A big jump from about $2.50 yesterday, all due to Katrina. This means when I refill my tank this week I will definitely pay over $30 for the very first time.
I know, it’s not […]

Back from Orlando

The Orlando airport Originally uploaded by rexworld.
Okay here’s the start of my photos from the Orlando vacation. It was way too hot down there, and muggy as hell. But it was fun.

Surfing from the Orlando airport

So I’m sitting here waiting to meet everyone else that’s flying into Orlando. Apparently my flight was first, Mom arrives in about an hour and then the cousins arrive an hour after that. I’m in the lobby of the Hyatt Hotel, which is literally at the center of the airport–all the terminals and […]

We’re a fat country

The national obesity rate is inching ever closer to 25%. Some places like right here in Kentucky have already crossed that milestone–one quarter of the adults in the Bluegrass State qualify as obese.
The definition apparently is a body-mass index over 30, and according to this calculator I’m pretty close. Definitely overweight (duh, if one-quarter […]

Top party schools

Princeton Review has come out with their 2005 list of top party schools, and UW-Madison takes top honors.
My beloved Texas A&M is nowhere to be found on the top 20 party schools. There was plenty of drinking but I guess it wasn’t really in the context of parties. Just people getting drunk […]

Enjoyed the food at the Kentucky State Fair

Went to the Kentucky State Fair this weekend, took a few photos and ate some weird fair food.
The fried bologna sandwich was a big disappointment. Everybody at work had talked about how great it was but I found it disappointing–the bologna was rubbery and the bread should have been toasted because it was too soft […]

Michael Bay needs a steadicam

Went to see The Island yesterday, since it arrived at the cheap theater just a few weeks after hitting the regular theaters. It’s the story of a couple clones who learn they exist simply to be harvested whenever the original needs a new part. It’s also perhaps the most disappointing movie of the […]

State Fair is here!

It’s time again for the Kentucky State Fair!
I love state fairs, though this year I probably won’t see any of the concerts. I already saw Kenny Chesney last year, the only concert I might want to see this year is Alan Jackson. But I’m not a big enough fan to spend the $40+ bucks […]

What happened with Starship Troopers?

So I was flipping thru the cable TV last night and two channels near each other had competing movies based on books. Spike (Channel 41) was showing The Hunt for Red October, while TNT (42) was showing Starship Troopers.
What exactly went wrong with Starship Troopers? Like Red October it’s based on […]

Solar-powered Prius

Well, not really solar-powered so much as solar-boosted. Somebody has modified an old Prius with solar cells on the roof. But it only improves fuel efficiency by about 10%, not nearly enough I’m sure to justify the cost of the solar cell mod.
I’m waiting for the solar-powered hybrid sports car. For my inevitable mid-life […]
