Schwarzenegger to veto gay-marriage bill
September 8, 2005So Governor Schwarzenegger has pledged he will veto the landmark gay-marriage bill that passed in California.
I’m of two minds here–on the one hand I’m disappointed in his veto, it’s clearly a blow to civil rights. On the other, the bill clearly violated the Proposition voted on a couple years ago where Californians decided by a very strong majority that marriage is only between a man and a woman.
Now I opposed that Proposition as well, but it’s clear that what really needs to happen in California is a Proposition that recinds the earlier proposition. More work needs to be done to get the attitudes to change, it’s not right to let the legislative body overturn the proposition. That was the point of the proposition process in California–to let the people’s voices be heard over the lobbyists who get too much influence over legislators.
In this instance the gay-rights activists just need to be patient and get back to work on helping change attitudes among California’s voters.
