Visitations are an odd custom

September 24, 2005

So I went to Bob’s visitation yesterday afternoon. They actually closed the office early so that folks could get to the visitation, which I thought was a nice gesture.

They had a photo montage running on a small LCD monitor, which amazed me that they had managed to create something like that so quickly. Not all the photos were digital to begin with so somebody spent a lot of time scanning in the old photos and assembling them in some software program to create the montage.

I’ve generally found the whole tradition of a visitation to be awkward, especially in this case because I only knew the deceased. It seems so hard to offer comfort to people you don’t know, the family he left behind.

I did manage to offer my condolences to Bob’s brother, who seemed to be holding up quite well. They’re apparently about a year apart, the same as me and Rey. So I definitely have some idea what he’s going thru.

I’ll be attending the funeral as well later this morning. It seems the right thing to do.
