No longer a manager

November 15, 2005

Well, technically my title still has the word “manager” in it. But to me, you’re not really a manager if you’re not managing people. And I no longer manage people, I have no direct reports.

Really I haven’t managed but the one person for a while now. It’s kinda silly to have one direct report, that seems like the definition of an unnecessary layer of management. My employer though seems to do that a lot in the org chart.

In my new job it doesn’t make sense for the technical producer to report to me so he’s off to the technical production team. Now I’m a “manager” without any managees.
