I might boycott Memoirs of a Geisha

November 30, 2005

So I noticed this morning that Yahoo’s personalization system thinks I might like Memoirs of a Geisha. How it can know this before the movie has even opened, before there are any user reviews to compare against my profile, is the topic for another post. What I’m annoyed at is the fact that a movie about the lives of Japanese Geisha stars two Chinese women.

Come on, there has to be two talented Japanese actresses they could have used instead. But no, they went with two well-known Chinese actresses to play the leads–Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang.

Now I love both of those actresses–thought they were great together in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. And Zhang was the reason to go see House of Flying Daggers. But still, it just seems wrong for them to be playing two Japanese characters.

Isn’t that a bit like the old Charlie Chan movies, where the lead character was actually played by a Caucasian? Or that movie about the Nez Pearce Indians, where Chief Joseph was played by an Hispanic?

Just seems wrong somehow.

    Hey Rex,

Yahoo has a system of “web beacons” that follow your activities on the internet. You’ll have to disable it through their security area, but they don’t make it easy to locate…do it for each e-mail address you have under yahoo…the same is true for the yahoo groups!

I’m also confused about this topic which is how I found your site, but Americans don’t have a clue about their own history to give even a hoot about another culture’s mores and values, so when I checked out the list of producers and powerful folks behind the scenes (casting directors, etc…)on the Memoirs imdb page…it all became clear to me…
