I don’t have any Brooks & Dunn on the iPod

December 15, 2005

2005 is almost over, which means of course everybody is putting out their “top of 2005″ lists. Including iTunes–they’ve got lists of their top albums and top songs for the past year. The cool thing is they have two versions of each list–top according to their critics and top according to actual purchases.

So I was looking thru the critics’ picks, to see if there might be some music I hadn’t heard of that’s worth downloading to the ‘pod. There’s some stuff I added to my cart, though I haven’t pulled the trigger yet and purchased them. Some of it indeed things I hadn’t heard, but some was stuff I had heard and just hadn’t gotten around to picking up a copy. Like the Brooks & Dunn song, It’s Getting Better All the Time.

This is one of those sad songs that country music does so well. A lifetime of heartache captured in a few minutes of music. I don’t know how many times I’ve sung along when this tune comes on the radio, love the song. So it’s definitely worth adding to the permanent collection.

The thing is, after I added it to the shopping cart I went looking in my iTunes library just to double-check that I didn’t already have the song. And it turns out I have no Brooks & Dunn at all. That just seems remarkable–16 GB of music, at least a third of which is country, and yet not a single Brooks & Dunn song. I know I have one of their CD’s somewhere, but apparently I’ve never felt the need to rip it into iTunes.

That just seems weird, got plenty of Reba and Garth and Dolly, but no B & D. Well, as soon as I actually purchase my current shopping cart of songs that will change.
