Canadians swing to the right — sort of
January 24, 2006Canadians last night voted out their Liberal government in favor of the Conservative party. But it’s a minority government yet again, just like its predecessor Liberal government. Meaning they won’t really be able to shift policies hard to the right as they will need to find coalition partners to help them govern.
That’s kindof a nice feature of a multi-party system like Canada’s–yes you can vote the old bums out without necessarily making a radical move towards some new set of bums. Unlike here in the US–if you don’t like the current party you can only vote for the other party. The lesser-of-two-evils system we have in the US doesn’t quite give us the flexibility they have in multi-party countries.
It’ll be fun to see how it all shakes out up there in the Great White North. I haven’t been to Canada in quite some time, I should try to make a trip out to Montreal or Quebec at some point.
