Free mailing labels

January 27, 2006

So I rarely send physical mail anymore, almost everything can be done online these days. Pay bills, communicate with friends, all of that stuff is easier and quicker to do on the Internet or via email.

But every now and then I do find I need to mail an actual postal letter. The thing is I hate having to write down my return address. I know it’s lazy, but I’m just not used to doing it anymore. Which is why I love it when I get a free sheet of mailing lables with my address already printed on the labels.

Now the people sending me these mailing labels generally want me to send them back some kind of contribution. It’s usually a charity or some civic group that sends these out, hoping you’ll donate money back. But the way I figure it, these are unsolicited so I’m going to use them even if I don’t end up sending in any money.

Besides, this kind of solicitation is woefully inefficient. For every dollar I send them, they probably have to spend half or more on the cost of printing up the labels and paying whatever fulfillment organization is handling the campaign. So I figure by using the labels but not sending them the money I’m helping them learn just how inefficient this kind of fund-raising can be.
