One step closer to the holodeck

February 8, 2006

Ah those ingenious Japanese engineers–they’ve developed a system that lets you “write” simple images in thin air using lasers. Basically it quickly heats up tiny spots in the air to make them glow, this forms the pixels that the system uses to draw 3-dimensional images in empty air.

That is awesome, though you gotta wonder if it’s safe to have that much laser power firing around. If it’s strong enough to superheat little puffs of air it could do serious damage if the beams accidentally strike people or animals.

Still it seems incredibly cool if they manage to pull this off. I’m guessing moving images will be fairly difficult, as the glowing plasma would need to be dispersed somehow between frames. But 3-d still images should be quite doable with this method.
