Foods that will disappear from your grocer’s shelves soon
February 25, 2006When it comes to my favorite items at the grocery store, I think I’m cursed. Every time I find something I really like, the manufacturer pulls it from the shelves soon afterwards.
Ben & Jerry’s did it to me a few years ago, sending both Rainforest Crunch and Apple Pie to the flavor graveyard. At least here in the US–apparently Apple Pie is still available in the UK. Might almost be worth a trip to jolly old England to find a pint of it.
And don’t get me started about the Philadelphia Cream Cheese Bagel-to-Go. What a great innovation–a single-serving of cream cheese, a little plastic knife, and a sliced bagel all vacuum-sealed together in a little plastic tub. Perfect for bringing in to work for breakfast, I loved the things. Now I can’t find them anywhere.
You get the picture–if I like the item, it’s a sure sign the manufacturer is going to yank it off the shelves real soon. With that in mind, I bring you a couple recent discoveries that I really like. Better try them now before they too disappear off the face of the planet.
First off are the “Meijer Gold” line of frozen pastries, only available at Meijer of course. I like both the Apple Blossom and the Chocolate Lava Cake but if I had to choose I’d go with the Apple Blossom. Baked slices of apple in a nice crunchy pastry shell. Goes great with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The other thing I discovered recently and really love are the Jimmy Dean Omelets. Zero carbs if you’re into that sort of thing. But what I like is that you can have a nice hot tasty omelet, no trans fats, in just two minutes from freezer to microwave to table. A nice post-workout meal, assuming you go to the gym before work like I do.
