What’s a Mercedes CLS 500 doing at KMart?

March 25, 2006

When I start work at Humana next week I will have to seriously upscale my wardrobe, going from the casual dress at CNET to a business professional environment. So I was at the nearby KMart picking up some of the various accoutrements–hangers, lint brush, etc. And I noticed that the car I parked next to was not something I would have expected to see at a KMart–a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS 500.

That car has a base price of $65,000. I was a bit surprised that somebody who could afford that kind of luxury was out shopping at a dumpy neighborhood KMart. And it is dumpy, let’s face it–this particular KMart makes Wal-Mart look upscale. Why would Mr. or Ms. Six Figures be shopping with us riff-raff? Are they fans of the Martha Stewart stuff they sell at the K? Or Jacelyn Smith’s clothing line?

It’s just incongruous. And even weirder, the car was there when I drove up and still there when I left. So clearly they weren’t just dropping in to pick up something. They were somewhere in the store spending some time doing real shopping. Weird. I thought the Mercedes crowd, and especially the CLS crowd, shopped at Target or above. Not the blue-light specials at KMart.
