Got Lotus Notes to sync with my Treo

April 18, 2006

My current employer uses Lotus Notes as the messaging solution. It’s a nice enough system but it’s something of a niche product and as such is not generally supported by 3rd-party software like the Palm HotSync. Which means I haven’t been able to sync my Notes calendar with the calendar on the old Treo 600 I recently picked up on eBay. I have to remember and enter important dates into both systems.

More importantly than the calendar though is the contacts database. Before I left CNET, I got my contact list updated in Outlook and then synced it up with the Treo. But I haven’t been able to use it in Notes, which means basically that I’ve had to look people up in the Treo and then manually enter their email address into Notes mail. Call me lazy but I find that annoying–both the Treo and Notes have a contacts database, they should just be in sync so I can avoid this manual two-step.

Now unfortunately my new employer isn’t supporting Treo internally, they’re moving to Blackberries. So I had to buy the syncing solution myself. The good thing is that such a beast even exists at all–Lotus EasySync.

It wasn’t what I’d call cheap, about $60 with the one-year upgrade support. But I got it installed this morning and it’s working fine. Set-up is a bit more manual than it should be–you have to set up a Personal Journal in Notes if you don’t have one. And even if you do already have one, the EasySync installer can’t detect it. You have to manually select the journal file as part of the install process.

And the other weirdness is that some events are not syncing. I suspect it’s because they’re repeating events–somehow the Treo can show them but since the start date is way in the past it’s not coming thru the EasySync conduit. Annoying but I can live with the minor bugs for now. Just happy to have my calendar and contacts (mostly) synced between the handheld and the desktop.
