New York Life has horrible customer service
April 19, 2006The 401K from my previous employer is held at New York Life Investment Management. I was told to expect a rollover package from them within two weeks from my last date of employment. But three weeks after leaving I still hadn’t received it so I looked around on their Web site, the only rollover stuff they had was to roll over *into* a NYLIM account. So I emailed their customer service asking how I could get the instructions for rolling my account *out* of NYLIM.
The reply took another week to arrive, and it was amazingly terse. It said, in total:
please contact the 800 number on your statement
No message, no “I’m sorry to hear you’re leaving us”. Just a terse one-liner, that doesn’t even bother to give the 800 number. It says to look up the 1-800 number on my statement. Of course I don’t have a current statement from them, so I’ll have to call the one on their Web site and hope to somehow navigate to the right 1-800 line.
Customer service like that leaves a bad taste. I’m definitely glad to be moving my money out of NYLIM. They don’t deserve to earn any more fees from me.
