CNET executive joins Yahoo

May 24, 2006

Wow this has to be a big blow to CNET–Vince Broady is leaving to join Yahoo. Broady is the guy who co-founded Gamespot.com, and helped it become one of the big growth engines for CNET.

It’s becoming something of a pattern, Yahoo stealing away senior management talent from CNET. Dan Rosensweig, their COO, came from CNET. Patrick Houston left CNET to start the Tech channel on Yahoo, and now this. On the one hand it’s a great testament to the kind of executives CNET nurtures, but it’s also bad that Yahoo seems to be able to pluck the best ones at will. Says something bad about CNET’s ability to retain the talent it nurtures, and that could be bad long-term for the company.

I suppose it shouldn’t really matter to me, I no longer own any CNET shares. But I put so much of my life into that company that I still feel a connection. I’m still rooting for them to succeed and grow, but news like this makes it harder and harder for them.
